When we mention the academy in ancient China, well-mannered scholars and diffuse ink will firstly spring to mind, a small academy embraced by lush vegetation, exquisite stationeries and well-sorted books on the desk, the teacher sitting next to it and the scholars taking a bow.
Academies in Chengdu have a long history and the Tang Dynasty was the origin of its academic culture. During that period, lots of litterateurs gathered and “Wenweng Shishi”, the oldest academy in Chengdu was established. Based on the academy’s courtyard culture and inspired by the edifications of Confucius’ analects on courtesy, the designers separate the whole space after thorough consideration to fulfil grand courtyards, gardens in gardens and etc. Furthermore, a variety of approaches to create Chinese landscape are skillfully introduced in the design to construct a sequenced and layered courtyard.
